Connecting you to the events, meetings & services

Gospel Reflection

This week is Trinity Sunday, the Sunday after Pentecost. "Trinity" is the understanding that we worship one God, but we experience God as three persons. God is intrinsically relational. This is a deep mystery. It's hard to grasp and there's probably something heretical in my attempt even to explain it! But suffice to say that God is bigger than we can grasp with our minds. Instead, we strive to recognize ourselves as known by God. It's a matter of the heart.

One of my favorite icons is that of the three angels whom Abraham hosted at the Oak of Mamre, attributed to the Russian iconographer Andrei Rublev in the early 15th century. The icon is a subtle rendition of the Trinity seated at a table.

This icon caught my imagination when it was suggested to me that the square on the fourth side of the table could have been where some putty was applied to attach small mirror, inviting the person gazing on the icon to picture themself seated at the table in relationship with God.

Come to St. Luke's this week to encounter the God who is calling you into relationship; the God who is bigger than any attempt we might make to enclose God in a box of our own understanding.
